From the CEO In an increasingly complex and fragmented global environment, the competition for capital has never been more intense. Investment today is highly mobile and increasingly selective, gravitating towards economies that can demonstrate credibility, competitiveness and the ability to translate ambition into action. For SA, this presents a significant opportunity. While global uncertainty continues to shape economic and investment decisions, there is growing evidence that SA is building momentum. Across business and government, there is increasing alignment on the reforms and interventions needed to unlock growth, strengthen competitiveness and enhance the country’s investment proposition. Importantly, the conversation is moving beyond diagnosis towards execution. This shift matters… Competitiveness is not an abstract concept. It is what attracts investment, enables businesses to expand, supports innovation and ultimately drives economic growth. Countries that compete successfully for global capital are those that create an environment where confidence can flourish – confidence in institutions, policy direction, governance and delivery. Encouragingly, there is growing recognition that SA’s long-term success depends on sustained collaboration between the public and private sectors. Initiatives such as Operation Phumelela, a capital markets taskforce to strengthen the competitiveness of SA’s financial markets, demonstrate what can be achieved when stakeholders align on shared economic priorities and work collectively to remove barriers to growth. While significant challenges remain, there is a renewed sense that progress is possible when ambition is matched by accountability and execution. Recent developments have also reinforced SA’s ambition to strengthen its position as a leading financial centre. The vision of establishing a Synthetic Financial Centre reflects a broader commitment to creating an environment that attracts capital, supports innovation and enhances SA’s role as a gateway for investment into the continent. Initiatives of this nature have the potential to deepen our capital markets, improve liquidity and reinforce our global competitiveness. As Africa’s largest exchange, the JSE has an important role to play in this journey. Our purpose extends far beyond operating a marketplace. We connect capital with opportunity. We support capital formation, facilitate investment and help create the conditions that enable businesses to grow. Equally importantly, we bring together investors, issuers, policymakers and market participants around a shared objective: building a stronger, more inclusive and more competitive economy. This commitment is reflected in platforms such as SA Tomorrow and the South Africa Macroeconomic Summit, which create opportunities for meaningful engagement on the issues that matter most to investors, businesses and policymakers. Through these conversations, a consistent message emerges: investors are looking for credible institutions, policy certainty, reform momentum and evidence of delivery. SA already possesses many of the attributes required to compete successfully on the global stage. We have deep and sophisticated financial markets, world-class market infrastructure, resilient institutions and a diverse economy rich with investment opportunities. These foundations provide a powerful platform from which to accelerate growth and attract long-term capital. The opportunity before us is to build on these strengths – to convert reform momentum into investment; investment into growth; and growth into broader prosperity. SA does not need to convince the world that it has potential. Our task is to continue demonstrating our ability to realise that potential through consistent execution, partnership and progress. If we remain focused on competitiveness, collaboration and delivery, I am confident that SA can strengthen its position in the global economy and create lasting value for generations to come.
